Class of 2002 reunited in the rain!

The Class of 2002 were welcomed back to their alma mater in the pouring rain! But the cold and the wet did not damper the Class of 2002’s spirit, as they warmly rekindled old friendships and remembered the good and great times at King Edward VII School.

Head Prefect of 2002,  Wakule Tshabangu addressed the School Assembly with a powerful and moving speech and this was superbly accompanied by the School Choir that sang in full voice at the assembly. The School War-Cry was the loudest heard in a long time in the corridors of King Edward VII School.

WELCOME CLASS OF 2002! Good to have you home!

Captain Graeme Smith scores his 24th Test Century for South Africa!

Captain Graeme Smith (115) and Jacques Kallis (107 not out) combined for a 200-run partnership as the tourists virtually batted the Kiwis out of the test.

South Africa took control with both Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis going to centuries as they reached 268 for three at stumps on the third day of the first test against New Zealand in Dunedin on Friday.

G Smith 24th Test Century -scored the most double centuries for SA!
71st over – Smith steps down the pitch and works the probing left-arm spin of Vettori through the packed leg-side field for a single that brings up his 24th test century! Coming off 201 balls, in five-and-a-quarter hours, it’s a fitting reward for a magnificent effort by the captain. How can anyone not want him in the team?

A stressed New Zealand team could not claim a wicket in the session as Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis took South Africa to 175 for two at tea on the third day of the first test in Dunedin on Friday.

Smith and Kallis preferred the slow-kill as they patiently put together their third-wicket stand of 128, showing astute shot selection and staying in their areas of strength. For Smith, that was as usual on the leg-side and even the many balls New Zealand insisted on bowling well outside off stump often travelled in that direction as the left-hander went into the break on 80 not out. Kallis, as usual, was an agent of immense calm as he overcame a tricky start after his first-innings duck to stride to 66 not out at tea.

With a lead of 140 runs and eight wickets in hand, South Africa are well on top, but their two most senior batsmen will feel the responsibility is on their shoulders to bat New Zealand totally out of the game. Congratulations to KES Old Boy Graeme Smith-we salute your efforts!

Neil McKenzie struck century for Bizhub Highveld Lions!

KES Old Boy, Neil McKenzie (Class of 1994) & Rookie Bavuma struck centuries to put the bizhub Highveld Lions in control after the first day of their SuperSport Series match against the Sunfoil Dolphins at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban on Thursday.

Rookie Bavuma made a free-flowing 121 from 160 balls, his third century of the season, while veteran McKenzie struck a patient 108 from 214 with the visitors ending the day on 303 for six. The two put on 228 together for the fourth wicket, which was the highest for the season by any team surpassing the 144 for the Chevrolet Warriors between Colin Ingram and Arno Jacobs against the Chevrolet Knights.

That partnership helped them recover from the loss of three early wickets, two of which came from seamer Mthokozisi Shezi (2-51), and Kyle Abbott picked up the three key wickets at the end of the day for figures of four for 61. The day began with the men from Johannesburg, who came into the game fresh of a draw against the Knights in the last game, winning the toss and choosing to bat first under slightly overcast conditions in the east coast. The 200 came up in the 70th over followed by the 150 partnership in 229 balls with Bavuma, who has a top score of 147 this season, reaching his century in 142 balls. The same stroke also brought up the 200 partnership with McKenzie then moving to his 44th first-class century from 198 balls when he pulled Abbott away to the square leg fence for four. But the bowler soon had his revenge when the new ball was taken and McKenzie was caught on the crease leg before wicket. Congrats Neil!

KES Old Boy Vaughn van Jaarsveld scores ton in SuperSport Series!

Vaughn van Jaarsveld (Class of 2003) struck a majestic century to lead the Sunfoil Dolphins to 269 for five at stumps on the first day of their SuperSport Series match against the Chevrolet Warriors at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban on Thursday. Van Jaarsveld strode to 106 off 178 deliveries with 16 fours and a six while his captain Imraan Khan weighed in with 92 after the Dolphins had won the toss and elected to bat.

The left-handed Van Jaarsveld constructed a superb innings as he first set about blunting the Warriors’ attack before launching an assault. He brought up his fifty off 118 balls but he needed just 44 more deliveries to reach three figures as he took full advantage of a tiring attack on a perfect batting wicket with his 10th SuperSport Series century, including 15 fours and a six. Van Jaarsveld faced 27 balls before scoring his first run but he was soon into his stride as he also managed to bring up his 4 000th first-class run during his innings, but with just over three overs left in the day’s play, his knock was ended.

He received a superb delivery from offspinner Simon Harmer that bounced and turned before finding the outside edge of the bat on its way to keeper Arno Jacobs’s gloves.

Congratulation’s Vaughan!

KES Old Boy Graeme Smith ‘biffs’ his critics!

Congratulations Graeme Smith: Smith form a relief for AB:

AB de Villiers may have been named man-of-the-series after South Africa concluded their battle against Sri Lanka on Sunday, but the Proteas captain was a happy man for another reason. His predecessor and close friend Graeme Smith had returned to form and showed his hand with a fine 125 off 143 balls. It was not enough to win the fifth Sunfoil one-day international as they went down by two wickets at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, but De Villiers was just thrilled with himself for having never lost belief in Smith. “I told the press that he was going to come through, and I’m very happy for my man,” the skipper said afterward. “Biff did extremely well.

KES Community congratulates Graeme on his return to form-long may it last!

Quinton de Kock shines for Bizhub Highveld Lions at Cubs Week!

De Kock, KES Old Boy takes the lead as Lions beat Warriors at Cubs Week:

Quinton de Kock, captain of the bizhub Highveld Lions, showed his class as his side eased past the Chevrolet Warriors on the second day of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Franchise Cubs Week in Stellenbosch. De Kock blasted an unbeaten 82 runs from a mere 53 deliveries. He and Paul de Chaud (20*) chased down the Warriors’ total of 105 in just 16 overs to secure a ten wicket victory. De Kock hit 14 boundaries which included five maximums. Earlier, none of the Warriors batsmen applied themselves. Soft dismissals and a good opening spell from Carmi le Roux (2/22) and Kagisho Rabada (2/14) saw the Warriors dismissed for 105. They were in trouble early on in their innings as they slumped to seven wickets for three with Le Roux removing Jaycin Syman (0) in his first over, while De Kock caught Michael Rushmere (3) behind the stumps of Rabada’s bowling. They slipped further to 34/6 the tail enders gave some flavour to the Warriors’ innings.
Quinton continued his impressive form when he scored an unbeaten 123 from 106 balls to lead South Africa to a nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the first match of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Under-19 Triangular Series in Cape Town on Wednesday. The South African captain smashed 13 fours and two sixes to carry his side to a comfortable victory over their neighbouring country.
“The boys bowled really well at the front in the impossible heat, they made it easy to work things around and made my job easier as a captain,” De Kock said.
South Africa started off well with De Kock sharing a 53-run partnership with Chad Bowes before Kyle Bowie scattered his stumps for 12 in the eighth over. After that, South Africa gave Zimbabwe a lesson in focus as De Kock led the runs chase with Cloete backing him up nicely with a patient knock, scoring 59 runs from 77 balls.
