Calling all the King Edward VII School Old Boys to KES on the 26 May! Hockey and Rugby fixtures vs St Stithians. 1st XI Hockey @ 10h30 & 1st XV Rugby @ 13h00.

On the eve of the first Home Coming Day, the Classes of 1971, 1987 and 1992 reunited at King Edward VII School for their reunions. It was a wonderful occasion as the Old Boys reunited, reconnected and rekindled friendships and memories! DG Dison from the Class of 1971 addressed the assembly along with Warren van der Merwe, Class of 1992 and Kevin Mc Evoy, Class of 1987. It was an emotional and powerful assembly that will long live in the memories of the Old boys and boys alike. Welcome home Old Boys!

Congratulations to Old Boy Paul Schapshak, PhD (Class of 1952) who has recently published his first book of poetry.
‘SELECTED POETRY, Book I, THEMES AND VARIATIONS’ is a book of poetry by Paul Shapshak, PhD. There are also 10 photographs and a cover photograph of paintings and sculptures by the poet’s father, Sir Rene Shapshak. Several of the photographs were taken by one of the poet’s sons, Dag Shapshak, MD. (For additional information, see the poet-author description from the back cover.) This book divides into eight sections, Pastoral, Mythology, Cosmology, Theology, History, Social, Economics, and the Arts. Poetic forms that appear in the book include Sonnets, Cantos, Epigrammes, and Haikus. There are themes and variations on the themes in the book. A point is never completed, but builds and stretches examining time shifts, time drifts, and geographical climes, explored with surprises, and some balls hit out the ballpark. Some are paintings done at the beach by cliffs or in fields by streams, every hour on the hour that vary in chiaroscuro, color, and overtones. The poet enjoys and hopes that you will as well.

26 MAY 2012 – HOME FIXTURE AGAINST ST STITHIANS COLLEGE – OLD BOYS HOME COMING DAY
Calling All King Edward VII School Old Boys!
Saturday the 26th May is our first ever Old Boys Home Coming Day. The purpose of this day is to get as many Old Boys of the school back for the day to come and watch the rugby and hockey against St Stithians and have a braai and a few beers after the game. We also want your families to join you and we will provide jumping Castles for the youngsters so that you can all enjoy some time catching up and renewing old friendships.
Many of our old boys lose touch with the school after leaving and we would like to reacquaint many of you with what is happening at KES. The school is in a great space, we would like you to witness this for yourselves. The 26th May is the Reds last home game of the season and with many of our Old Boys living out “North” we thought that the St Stithians fixture would be the ideal fixture to have our first homecoming day. We also believe that it is a wonderful opportunity to expose your families to the traditions that you all lived through during your time at KES.
There are two reunions happening that weekend with the class of 1987 celebrating their 25th reunion and the class of 1992 their 20th reunion. Please feel free to join us, we will welcome you home with open arms. We also look forward to hosting your families and letting them into some of the goings on at our fine school. Come on Old Boys, please support us and we look forward to your company at our first ever homecoming day.
Sons of this place, let this of you be said, that those of you who live. Are worthy of your dead. Strenue.
Kindest regards

The King Edward VII School shop “adopted” Charlie the peregrine falcon some years ago. Donations from boys and parents fund his adoption annually. The annual adoption fee is R850 which we have been able to raise every year from the generosity of the boys and their parents.
Charlie is a resident at The Dullstroom Bird of Prey and Rehabilitation Centre – situated on the Belfast/Dullstroom Rd approx 1km outside of Dullstroom.
Established in 1997 by 2 Englishmen, who are passionate falconers, the centre has grown substantially in the last few years.
One of the centre’s main aims is to educate and promote awareness of the raptor species as, hopefully, through this education – particularly of school children, they may help reduce the persecution of raptors – a world wide problem.
Another of the essential services they offer is to rehabilitate injured and neglected birds.
Young birds taken from the nests become “imprinted” –mentally damaged by being handled by humans and consequently the bird thinks it is a human and can never be returned to the wild.
Many of these birds are brought to the centre or reported or abandoned and once healthy they are kept in appropriate cages and may be used in demonstrations.
The centre also does captive breeding and is also involved in helping save some the world’s most endangered species. Over the years they have rehabilitated and released back into the wild a number of birds. This takes much care and a great deal of time and understanding .
Visitors to the centre can experience a very interesting and informative show as well as seeing a variety of birds in bird friendly cages.
The centre relies heavily on gate takings and contributions.
When next you are in the Dullstroom area take time out to visit the centre and I are sure you will find it a worthwhile, informative and rewarding experience.
Any further queries on this worthy project or how you can help, please contact Rosemarie Botha at the School Shop, or email her at rbotha@kesnet.co.za
The School Communicator will provide parents with all the relevant information they need to keep up with school life!
