KES Old Boy Habana shows his class & RED spirit!

On the Springbok website: Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer with record try-scorer Bryan Habana, who was honoured for his 50 Test tries by Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula in Johannesburg today. Habana donated his prize money of R50,000 to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. What a superb gesture from a true champion.

WOW-what a legend and true gentleman is our KES Old Boy, Bryan Habana. King Edward salutes you, Champ! Well done.

Magical Habana scores his 49th & 50th Test Try for SA!

King Edward VII School Old Boy & Springbok legend, Bryan Habana scored his 49th and 50th Test Tries vs Samoa on Saturday 22 June.

Reported on Supersport.com website: South Africa captain Jean de Villiers believes Bryan Habana has magic in his hands and feet after the winger notched up his 50th test try against Samoa on Saturday.

The 2007 IRB Player of the Year became the sixth person in test history to reach the milestone, managing it in his 86th appearance for the Springboks and helping the side to a 56-23 victory.

“It is a wonderful effort, to score 50 tries in a career at all levels of rugby is great, but to score 50 for your country in tests is outstanding,” De Villiers told reporters.

“He is a classy player, but has also put in a lot of hard work over the years. There always seems to be magic when he touches the ball. Hopefully there will be many more.”

Habana will join French side Toulon at the end of the Super Rugby season, one of a number of Springboks who are looking to cash in on lucrative deals in Europe and Japan.
But unlike most who are forced to give up their international careers when moving away from South Africa, national team coach Heyneke Meyer has already hinted Habana will remain in his plans leading up to the 2015 World Cup.

“In Super Rugby he has looked rather ordinary this season but there is something about Bryan that when you put him in a Bok jersey he’s extraordinary,” Meyer said recently.

“He is a great player, we go back a long way and he has always played well for me.”

Habana still has some way to go to reach the top of the international try-scoring ranks, however.

Japan wing Daisuke Ohata heads the list with 69 in 58 tests, followed by Australian David Campese who grabbed 64 in his 101 appearances in a Wallaby shirt.

Wing Shane Williams managed 58 for Wales and another two for the British and Irish Lions, while current Japan player Hirotoki Onozawa has 55 to date.

Rory Underwood ran in 50 tries in his 91 tests, 49 for England and one with the Lions, a mark matched by Habana in five fewer tests.

The King Edward Community hail Habana’s wonderful achievement and certainly agree with all the media reports, noting Bryan as a true ambassador for South African sport and a role model to all young South African’s. Congratulations Bryan on a fantastic, magical achievement, you have done your country and school very proud!

King Edward’s Habana awarded ‘Man of Match’ in Bok clash!

King Edward VII School Old Boy and Springbok winger earned high praise from Coach Meyer after the BOKS victory over Italy on Saturday 8 June.

Following report back on Supersport.com: Heyneke Meyer was left “amazed and surprised” by Bryan Habana’s pace after the veteran winger helped the Springboks begin their international season with a 44-10 victory over Italy at Kings Park, in Durban, on Saturday.

The Western Province wideman, playing in his 84th test for South Africa, scored a fine solo try and set up another for JJ Engelbrecht. The hosts outscored the tourists by five tries to one.

“I don’t know what the situation is with Bryan,” coach Meyer told the post-match press conference.

“What amazes me about Bryan is that sometimes I watch him play Super Rugby and he looks really ordinary, but then he pulls on the Bok jersey and he’s a different player.

“I thought he was awesome tonight. I was surprised to see his pace at one stage, but when Bryan plays well, the team plays well. He’s always played great rugby for me and I’m very thankful for that.”

Habana earned the ‘man-of-the-match’ award after  Habana’s sizzling speed then saw him collect a pass out wide, cut inside cleverly, shrug off some half-hearted tacklers and race in for the third try – and his 48th for his country.

The RED COMMUNITY applaud Bryan on his award and wish him further success for the remaining matches in the Castle Incoming Tour.
