King Edward VII School Old Boy and  South African International cricketer, Quinton de Kock was named as the Old Edwardians Sportsman of the Year following his performances for both the Highveld Lions, and the South African team in one day and T20 Internationals.

The 20 year old left hand batsman and wicket keeper has been a star in the making for a number of years starting with his achievements at King Edward VII School, then the Society, through to the Lions and finally, for his country.

Further KES Old Boys and current King Edward learners were awarded with top accolades, showing their class, grit and determination. We applaud and congratulate many of our Old Boys mentioned below!

The runner up was Nic Gonsalves (KES Old Boy) who played hockey for South Africa, and was in their Olympic squad, as well as being instrumental in ensuring that the club finished 3rd in their first season in Premier league.

“Such was the quality of nominations this year that the final choice was the most difficult in many years” said Mike Dunk, Communications Officer for the Society. “In fact we nominated 6 people as finalists rather than the usual 5, as to differentiate between them was an impossible task. They were in fact all worthy “winners.””

The successes of the club throughout the year were highlighted, including the achievements of squash in winning the 7 trophies, including the Best Club in Gauteng; cricket with their two Premier league titles; tennis who have world champions who won the Kia International mixed doubles event in Australia as well as the success achieved by bowls, junior football and cricket, and hockey who finished 3rd in Premier league at their first attempt.

“It was a year that will be looked back upon as one the most successful in the history of the Society on the sports field for many a year.” Dunk said.

The nominees for the top award were:

Stephen Cook (cricket), Quinton de Kock, Nic Gonsalves, Julie Mansour (tennis), Neil McKenzie (cricket), Dion Willis (water polo).

Stephen, Quinton and Neil are all KES Old Boys!

The full list of awards is:

As is the norm, KESCO has partnered with the Phoenix Foundation Committee and the Tomorrow Trust (a NGO that supports the needs of children and youth living in orphaned and/or vulnerable conditions), in order to raise funds to support one 2013, Grade 12 disadvantaged learner with tertiary educational funding for next year.

Memorial Parade was a fitting tribute!

The Annual Remembrance Parade held on Sunday, 10 November at King Edward VII School was a fitting tribute to our fallen soldiers. The King Edward family young and old came out on a beautiful, sunny day to pay their respects. The Guard of Honour consisting of learners drawn from the Grade 11 Group continued the tradition in a professional and fitting parade.

Sons of this place, let this of you be said:
That you who live are worthy of your dead

KES Old Boy De Kock scores a magical maiden 100 in ODI!

King Edward VII School Old Boy, Quinton De Kock  smashed his maiden hundred to help South Africa beat Pakistan by 28 runs in the fourth one-day in Abu Dhabi on Friday, taking an unassailable 3-1 lead.

And the swashbuckling but modest left-hander said South Africa will go for the kill. “We definitely look to get it 4-1 and that is our main goal and if we do that it would be awesome,” De Kock said after team practice on Sunday. De Kock said his innings was more pleasing as it helped his team win.

“It was great,” said De Kock of his 135-ball 112. It was a tight knock and I enjoyed it a lot and it was more good for the team that with the match we won the series so it was good,” said De Kock, dropped by Mohammad Hafeez off paceman Sohail Tanvir when on three.

The Gauteng born De Kock said his hard work paid off after a disappointing one-day series in Sri Lanka in July this year.

“I got back and worked hard and did a lot of analysis and technical work and that is paying off. It was difficult to face Pakistani spinners, it’s always a big challenge but I am happy that the hard work is paying off,” said De Kock who had scores of 20, 8 and 27 in Sri Lanka.

He replaced injured Graeme Smith in the fourth match and instantly made his mark with a 40 in the third match, which South Africa won by 68 runs.

“I wouldn’t say that I have replaced Graeme, they are big shoes to fall in so I have to make sure that I meet those standards,” said De Kock.

“It’s great to be in the team. All accept me what I am and it’s a great team environment,” said De Kock, who has modeled his batting on former Australian great Adam Gilchrist.

Congratulations Quinton, the King Edward Community applaud your efforts and look forward to many more centuries been notched up by our talented Old Boy!

Joy paid tribute to the significant role that Akhane Construction played in the process – well done Pierre and team.

Well done Joy, a fitting acknowledgement of your professional inputs into the library project. King Edward VII School and Community are extremely proud of this wonderful facility, where learning and knowledge is exercised and enjoyed by all of our learners on a daily basis.

King Edward’s Scarra is a BOK!

King Edward VII School Old Boy, Siyabonga Ntubeni was yesterday included in the Springbok Touring Squad to Wales, Scotland and France. The diminutive 22-year-old, affectively known as “Scarra”, was the big bolter in Heyneke Meyer’s 32-man squad for the November internationals.

Ntubeni was the form hooker of the Currie Cup competition and was acknowledged as the player of the Month for September. According to rugby365 website, Scarra is quoted in saying on his selection: “Words cannot describe my feelings at the moment,” an elated Ntubeni said following Monday’s squad announcement.

“It really is beyond my wildest dreams. I’d like to thank everyone at Western Province – my teammates and coaches – and I look forward to joining my WP mates in the Bok squad.”

Ntubeni joins another KES legend and BOK superstar, Bryan Habana in the squad. Congratulations Scarra, we wish you much success in this exciting adventure. The RED Community has their sights firmly fixed on you!

Furthermore our Old Boy has shown he has a big heart and is generously giving back to the community too. Western Province hooker Scarra is just 22 but when asked to be the face of the Groote Schuur Hospital’s neonatal unit’s new campaign, ‘Little by Little’, he obliged without thinking twice. Ntubeni says he loves children and his warm and friendly demeanour was a hit with the kids and PR people alike.

Well done Scarra, we are extremely proud of you!

KES Old Boy Puso Thahane has the law on his side!

King Edward VII School Old Boy, Pusa Thahane (Class of 2006) another King Edward success story is making strides in the law faculty. Puso (25) is a candidate attorney at Bowman Gilfillan, one of the top five law firms in South Africa.

Thahane is also a businessman and leader. In an interview with the Daily Sun, Puso said: ‘ It was my goal to work at Bowman Gilfillan as a corporate lawyer in their Mergers and Aquisitions department. I applied in the last year of my undergraduate degree and was offered the job about two years before I joined the firm.’

The young lawyer was born and raised in Rockville, Soweto, later moving to Cyrildene, where he was close to his alma mater, King Edward VII School. Where in Grade 11, he became the Junior Mayor of Johannesburg.

In 2007 he founded an initiative called, ‘Grow to Lead’, where young people learnt to serve as leaders in their communities. A year later he co-founded with another KES Old Boy, Imran Kahn, Attitution, an education brand which offers extra lessons and communication skills to learners and students throughout Johannesburg.
Whilst a student  at WITS, he served as president of the Golden Key International Honour Society and was named, ‘Student Leader of the Year’ in his final year in 2012.

Puso says he is inspired by his parents and Africa’s promise for a prosperous future for all.

King Edward VII School is inspired by young men, role-models and  leaders like Puso and congratulate him on his success so far.
