An Assembly address by the Head Boy of 1965, Douglas Wilson, was warmly received by the School, Staff and Old Boys. That Assembly was then followed by the King Edward Association Golf Day at the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club.

Saturday evening saw the reunion groups each meet and celebrate at various venues for  their reunion dinners. We won’t publish ‘how late those groups partied for’, but have it in good faith, a wonderful time was held by all the groups!

Sunday, 8 November saw our Reunion groups join the School and Community in our Annual Remembrance Parade and Service at King Edward VII School.

It was a memorable weekend for all and a true celebration of our Schools rich tradition and history.

Well done and ‘thank you’ to all, especially Ms Derron Van Eeden who co-ordinated this weekend for all our Old Boys.

KES Old Boy and BSG CEO named in 2015 IT Personality of the Year Awards!

Congratulations to King Edward VII School Old Boy, Greg Reis (Class of 1981) on this prestigious nomination.

Encouraging all of our Red Army to get voting for Greg, please.

BSG CEO named on Top 10 shortlist in 2015 IT Personality of the Year Awards. BSG CEO, Greg Reis, has been named as a finalist in the upcoming ITWeb IT Personality of the Year awards. This is the second time in recent years that Greg’s name has featured among the finalists, having been a Top 5 finalist in 2011. The prestigious awards, presented by the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa (IITPSA) in association with ITWeb, the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) and Gartner Africa, are designed to honour people who have made an outstanding impact on the South African ICT industry over the past year and a significant contribution to the IT profession.

Past winners of the IT Personality of the Year award, now in its 37th year, include Alan Knott-Craig Sr, Asher Bohbot, Andile Ngcaba and Mark Shuttleworth, among others. Although the Top 10 shortlist is selected by a panel of judges from a great number of nominations received from the IT community, ITWeb readers and the public, awarding of the coveted title is based largely on public votes.

Having founded BSG in 1997, Greg has been instrumental in its continued success and ongoing growth. Under Greg’s leadership, BSG has grown to over 200 employees across two geographic regions, with aggressive expansion plans for the coming years. Greg’s vision and influential leadership style helped BSG to establish a sustained record as an employer of choice, placing in the Top 5 of the Deloitte Best Company to Work For (2007 – 2012), as well as winning the Discovery Healthiest Company Index in 2011 and 2012, and featuring in the Top 3 in 2014.

Greg is deeply passionate about people and planet, investing considerable time in strategic socio-economic and environmental programmes. Greg serves as a board member, and in some cases Chairman, of a number of University Advisory Boards, as well as being a founder and long-term board member of CITi (Cape IT Initiative) and its flagship project, Bandwidth Barn. Greg is actively involved in several conservation projects, and works tirelessly in his personal capacity to protect African wildlife.

Over and above his commitment to business excellence, Greg is an avid social citizen, spearheading BSG’s support of education, especially Maths and Science education in underprivileged areas across South Africa. Greg believes in the birth right of every child to a decent education and because of this BSG has adopted LEAP Science and Maths Schools as the primary beneficiary of its CSR initiatives. Greg is also a keen endurance sportsman, and it was this passion that inspired hundreds of BSG employees and affiliates to participate in various BSG-sponsored triathlons and cycling events in support of LEAP, having raised in excess of half a million rand over the past five years.

To show your support for Greg, please vote for him by visiting VOTE4GREG and making your mark in support of someone who prides himself in being a proactive force for positive change.

Voting closes on 21 September 2015 and Top 5 finalists will be announced in October, and the winner is announced at the IITPSA Annual President’s Awards event on 7 November 2015 at Montecasino.

Strenue Greg, the King Edward Community applaud you on your fine achievements and we support you in this nomination.

Go School- get voting!

KES Old Boy Gillespie art exhibition in New York September 2015!

King Edward VII School Old Boy, Kevin Connelly Gillespie, Class of 1992, will be exhibiting in Manhattan during the month of September!

Born in 1975 in Johannesburg, South Africa, Kevin was very fortunate to be exposed to the arts at a young age, as the son of a classically trained trombonist. Upon graduating from King Edward the VII High School, in 1992, Kevin had a very clear vision to pursue a career in the arts. With his passion ignited, he began his collage career at Parktown College, where he was granted a full college scholarship and several drawing and painting awards.

After graduation from college, Kevin then relocated to Cape Town at the age of 21. The move to a new city sparked many new connections and opportunities. There, Kevin was able to begin his art career by participating in both group and solo exhibitions. While residing in Cape Town, he established an artist group focusing on live figure drawing and collaborated on a series of commissions. Several years later, Kevin had the great fortune in meeting Vladimir Tretchikoff, the renowned Russian realist, before his passing. This had a profound impact on Kevin’s perception, contributing to his decision to move to NYC. He relocated to NYC in 2000. Kevin’s body of work, now focuses on a unique contrast between the highly complex and traditional styles of painting and iconic contemporary imagery, that subtly questions our cultural boundaries and political identity.

Kevin will be exhibiting in Manhattan, New York for the next month – “Artist highlights the plight of the Rhino in his home country”

New Townhouse Development at Sir Donald Gordon House!

In keeping with the School`s strategy to incrementally increase capacity to accommodate educators as close to work as possible, the King Edward Educational Trust (KEET), in close collaboration with the School`s Governing Body, recently embarked on a project to develop 4 townhouses on the Trust property where the Sir Donald Gordon House boarding establishment is located.

Completion of the townhouses is scheduled for early November, and is testimony to the ongoing objective of the Governing Body to work closely with the Trust in providing ever improving facilities at the School. The King Edward Educational Trust is chaired by Old Boy Michael Faber, of the family that has historic links with the School, and is blessed with a number of astute old boy trustees who give generously of their personal time in serving the best interests of both K.E.P.S and KES.

The townhouses are yet another example of the School`s intent to provide an educational environment that endorses our desire to deliver a `best of breed` product.

KES OBA sneak the win at St John’s Gaudy Day celebrations!

Congrats KES Old Boys XV on your 19-14 win over SJC Old Boys!!

On the 11 July, the annual Gaudy Day held at St John’s College, had our Old Boys face up to the ‘old enemy’, the St John’s Old Boys in the classic clash.

At half time the OBA was 12-0 up, but then the St John’s Old Boys stepped-up a gear and scored 2 quick tries to lead 14-12. In the dying minutes of the game, our forwards kept possession and Valentine scored the winning try under the posts.

The trophy returns home until 2016! A great day of friendship shared with our friends ‘down the road’ and a firm favourite event on the calendar of the Old Boys Army.

Go School! Well done to our King Edward VII School Old Boys. Thank you to those who played and those who came our to support the Old Boys.
