KES Old Boy William Kentridge named Africa’s Most Powerful Artist!

King Edward VII School Old Boy and renowned global artist, William Kentridge has been officially named Africa’s Most Powerful Artist!

South African artist William Kentridge has officially been named Africa’s most powerful artist in the annual ArtReview Power 100 list, an accolade that sees him beat out major international art names like Marina Abramovic and Olafur Elliason.

It’s not the first time that the Johannesburg-based artist has been included in the prestigious list — created by art magazine ArtReview and frequently referred to as the “Forbes List” of the art world. But this year, Kentridge moves up the list to position 58, from 2016’s position at 62.

“It’s hard to keep up with Kentridge, who’s been working on events, operas, exhibitions and long-term installations globally this past year,” ArtReview says in their motivations for his inclusion.

“In 2017 the artist has had gallery exhibitions in Berlin, Milan, Paris and New York, and significant shows at SFMOMA [San Francisco Museum of Modern Art] and the Cincinnati Art Museum, while his “Thick Time” exhibition toured from the Whitechapel Gallery, London, to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and the Louisiana Museum in Denmark.”

KES wear blue gloves in support of Stroke Survivors!

Red Community Cares: Annual Stroke Awareness Campaign took place at King Edward VII School on Monday 30 October, in support of World Stroke Day held on 29 October 2017.

At a Monday Assembly on the 30th, our School and Staff stood in support of the Stroke Survivors Foundation by wearing a blue glove on their dominant hand, to create an awareness how difficult it is for a stroke survivor to go about their daily business with only the use of one hand.

George Scola a KES Old Boy and stroke survivor from a stroke in 2008 addressed the School on the symptoms/signs to look out for and chatted about the SSF work and awareness campaign.

Thank you to KESCO, Mrs Mania and Headmaster Mr Lovatt who encouraged KES to be involved in this project. Well done to all of the King Edward community who eagerly got involved in supporting this campaign.

State of Art Mathematics Centre of Excellence Official Opening!

Thursday, 7 September was a very special and memorable day for the staff and learners of King Edward VII School, as our Mathematics Centre was officially opened by Mr Lovatt & the School Governing Body.

The King Edward VII community thanks `The Victor Daitz Foundation` and Èdgar Droste Trust`, for the extraordinary generous support of the project to construct our new `state of art` Mathematics Centre, another watershed landmark in our continuous pursuit of excellence.

Invited guests, sponsors, donors, Trust members, Old Boys’, governors, project team managers and friends of the School took part in the cutting of the ribbon and formalities to officially declare The Victor Daitz Mathematics Centre OPEN!

Wonderful to have Mr Sam Abrahams, Chairman of The Victor Daitz Foundation, officiate the opening along with Headmaster, Mr Lovatt.

This magnificent facility was made possible by the generosity, sponsorship and donations from the following group of very special people:

* The Victor Daitz Foundation
* The Edgar Droste Trust
* The Old Boys’ Association – sponsored & donated the new ‘Old Boys’ Gates’.

This top class facility will now house the Mathematics Department & the new hockey pavilion. Added additions & projects like this would not be possible, without the generosity and support of our wonderful Old Boy Community and we are indeed blessed with this most beautiful building.

Congratulations to all involved in this project, namely Joy Campkin-Smith of Studio Joy & Architects and the construction/project team of Akhane Construction Pty Ltd for their vision and creativity in this project. To each and every person involved in this project, we salute you and thank you for your contribution no matter how small or big.

Very proud day for King Edward VII School.

Tradition of Excellence continues.
