KESFAM Winter Drive Challenge-please support!

KESCO, under the guidance of the Jhb Councillors and the RCL have requested that in order to swell our collection of canned food for charity we would like to ask each person attending the Association Gathering and 300 Club to bring a can of food as an ‘entrance’ fee when they meet on Wednesday 25 April from 17h30 at the Rob Wray pavilion.

If you are not attending the 25th April meeting, we are appealing to the Edwardian family to donate cans of food, used clothing, blankets or non perishable food for our Winter drive. These may be handed in at the front office. This very worthy drive continues until the end of Term 2, 22nd June.

Thanking you in advance for your support!

The 2012 Easter Festival staged from the 5th April-9th April 2012 concluded in style with the REDS XV completing 3/3 wins and KES 1st XI also winning against Noordheuwel 2-0 earlier in the morning. The line-up of hockey and rugby teams showcased many of the leading rugby and hockey schools in the country, including a touring Italian rugby team who in their 3rd visit to the Festival showed a great improvement winning 2/3 of their encounters. KEPS u13 side also proved they are a strong, dedicated, young side with plenty of talent for the future. The 2012 KES Easter Festival, with the support of new primary sponsor Standard Bank, again provided enticing entertainment for the thousands of spectators who descended upon the School over the holiday week-end.

Thank you to ALL involved in making the 2012 Festival the success that it was! The ‘RED ARMY’ of supporters, volunteers and Old Boys proved once again that King Edward VII School is the place to be during the Easter weekend!

Gary Player honoured with PGA Lifetime Achievement Award!

South African golf legend and King Edward VII School Old Boy Gary Player is to be honoured for his contribution to golf by being named the 10th recipient of the PGA Tour’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Hall of Fame member has won nine Major championship titles, including a career Grand Slam, and has 165 tournament wins to his name around the world, 24 of which were on the PGA Tour and 19 on the Champions Tour.

He is widly recognised as the best international (not American or European) golfer to have played the game.

Player was the special playing Editor at Compleat Golfer for many years, and will receive his award on 9 May at the Players Championship.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was created in 1996 and is awarded to people who have made an exceptional contribution to the PGA Tour for a long time, both on and off the course.

The Black Knight joins an illustrious list of people who have been honoured with the award including Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Jack Burke Jr., Pete Dye, Deane Beman, Jack Nicklaus, and President George H.W. Bush.

“This is a great honor,” Player said. “Golf has allowed me to live a truly blessed life, and I have tried my best to give something back to the sport. Being recognized with true gentlemen of the sport like Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson and Jack Nicklaus is humbling, and I will continue to help promote and support this wonderful game until the day I die.

“When I first arrived in America, I was not sure how I would be received as a foreign-born player, but the PGA Tour and the American fans were absolutely fantastic and made me feel like one of their own. It is difficult to put into words what that meant to me and my family, and I will always be thankful for the love and support I have received from this great country.”

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem believes that Player is an easy choice to receive the award.

“As one of the most accomplished – not to mention most-traveled – players in all of sports, Gary Player’s love of golf and his desire to use his talents to help everyone he comes in contact with make him most deserving of the PGA Tour’s Lifetime Achievement Award,” he said.

“You would be hard pressed to find an aspect of the game or corner of the world that hasn’t been influenced by Gary and his positive attitude over the past 50-plus years. He epitomizes the phrase ‘lifetime achievement,’ and it will be an honour to recognize him for all of his accomplishments.”

Congratulations Mr Player, the King Edward VII School Community applauds your achievement and new award. A true legend!

Habana is the only South African player to score 50 Super Rugby tries!

King Edward VII School Old Boy, Bryan Habana not only assisted his Stormers side in securing a victory over the Lions on Saturday, 24th March, but he became the first South African to score 50 Super Rugby tries!

The Stormers had to fight hard for their 24-19 victory over a gutsy Lions team in their Super Rugby match at Coca Cola Park on Saturday.

The visitors started off strongly as they scored the first try of the match a minute after the kickoff, with hooker Tiaan Liebenberg scoring in his 50th Super Rugby match for the Stormers, and Joe Pietersen converting. The Stormers built on that positive momentum 12 minutes later with Bryan Habana becoming the only South African player to score 50 Super Rugby tries with a classy try. Nick Koster broke picked the ball up from a scrum then offloaded to Habana who chipped the ball ahead and touched down as the ball bounced into the goal area.

Congratulations Bryan, the King Edward VII School Community salutes you on your fine achievement.

National Coach, Striker & Goalkeeper are KES Old Boys in SA Hockey Team!

The South African Hockey Association released the names of the players who will do duty for the national men’s team at the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Kakamigahara, Japan from April 26 to May 6. Included is KES Old boy, Thornton McDade (Class of 1998), Michael Smith (Class of 2008) & National Coach Gregg Clark (Class of 1989).

The team, which will be captained by Western Province’s Austin Smith, shows three changes from the side that won the bronze medal at the Champions Challenge Tournament at Randburg Hockey Stadium on December 4.

Goalkeeper Brendon Botes of Eastern Province is replaced by Michael Smith of Witwatersrand, defender Gareth Carr of KZN Coastal Raiders is replaced by defender/midfielder Jonty Robinson of Northern Blues, and striker Miguel da Graca of Southern Gauteng is replaced by Amathole (Border) forward Julian Hykes.

It wasn’t easy trying to find the correct balance for the team, but there are no wholesale changes and the core group is unchanged,” said SA head coach Gregg Clark. “It’s a well-balanced side with lots of versatility and several players being able to play in different positions.

“It’s tough on the guys left out, but people must understand that at this level the margins of selection between elite athletes are very small,” said Clark. “We have never been to Japan before but this is a talented bunch with good temperaments who have been playing good, confident hockey and we accept the challenge that the tournament will bring.”

Smith is the only new cap, while Robinson and Hykes have regained their places in the team.

SA will be top seeds in Kakamigahara, followed by Japan, China, Austria, Czech Republic and Brazil. The teams play each other once, with the top two sides after the league round meeting in the final on May 6.

The six teams will be competing for the last available place in the 12-team Olympic Games men’s hockey event.

In the league round in Kakamigahara, SA meet Brazil on April 26, Czech Republic on April 28, China on April 30, Japan on May 2, and Austria on May 4 before the classification matches, including the all-important final, on May 6.

The winners will join Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Korea, Holland, Spain, Pakistan, New Zealand, Argentina, India and Belgium in the London 2012 Olympics, with the men’s hockey event beginning on July 29 while the closing ceremony is on August 12.

The groups for the London Games are as follows: Group A: Australia, Great Britain, Spain, Pakistan, Argentina, and Winner Japan OQT. Group B: German, Holland, Korea, New Zealand, India, Belgium.

The Olympic groups are determined by the world rankings.

SA MEN’S OQT HOCKEY TEAM:

Goalkeepers: Rassie Pieterse (Southern Gauteng), Michael Smith (Witwatersrand).

Defenders: Andrew Cronje (Western Province), Justin Reid-Ross (Northern Blues), Lance Louw (SG), Lloyd Madsen (KZN Coastal Raiders), Rhett Halkett (NB).

Midfielders: Jonty Robinson (NB), Clinton Panther (SG), Austin Smith (capt, WP), Tim Drummond (KCR), Wade Paton (KCR), Taine Paton (KCR).
