King Edward Old Boy Scarra Ntubeni making waves in Currie Cup!

King Edward VII School Old Boy, Siyabonga Ntubeni (2009) is certainly standing out as a ‘notable player’ on the current Currie Cup report backs. After Week 2 in the Currie-Cup fixtures, Ntubeni has made an impact coming-off the bench for the WP & Rugby365 has him mentioned in their ‘Team of the Week’ after the weekend clashes.

Siyabonga is again included in the WP Currie Cup Team to face the Lions on the 25 August at Coca-Cola Park and the King Edward Community will be cheering on this burly hooker and looking for another big performance. Go Scarra!

‘Winter Wonderland’ at King Edward!!

Much excitement was had at King Edward VII School as sleet turned into snow-flakes and finally all that is ‘red’ at King Edward turned snow white! The boys had an awesome time and have decided ‘snow-ball fighting’ is a great extra-mural to introduce to the Winter programme!

Congratulations Graeme Smith ‘100 not Out’!

Graeme Smith a King Edward VII School Old Boy, will on the 19 July 2012, mark a very special milestone, his 100th Test at the Oval!

adidas along with input from Graeme have developed a special boot to commemorate this special 100th test match . Graeme chose a main colour of gold and black to be used in design – gold obviously connecting to the milestone of 100 – adidas used this to highlight specific areas of the boot. The name ‘biff 100’ has been added to the strap of the boot to give it extra special reference to Graeme. Graeme also choose to add the King Edward School VII School crest to the back of the boot, this referencing to his old alma mata.

adidas have also developed a further part to this overall campaign which will involve the following exciting programmes:

Once Graeme returns from his tour to the UK, adidas will be setting up a coaching clinic in Johannesburg at King Edward VII School . adidas will be looking to include one of Graeme’s main mentors in his life (Jimmy Cook) at the coaching clinic. A wonderful opportunity for the boys of King Edward VII School and a prime example of commitment from Graeme to his old school, King Edward VII School and for him to give something back to them.

adidas is currently giving away 3 pairs of boots via their adidas twitter account (@adidasZA) so we encourage all to follow them on twitter. You can also follow the competition being held on Supersport website!

Notable Facts on Graeme and adidas:

adidas has sponsored Graeme for period of over 12 years.
Graeme has worn Adidas in all Test’s (99), ODI’s (181), T20’s (33) he has played for South Africa – so his 100th test will be his 100th test in adidas.

Graeme Smith’s 100 Test Boot

The most sought after world number one test ranking will also be a goal Graeme Smith and his Protea Team will be striving for, when the two titans clash in the three match test series. It is noted that Graeme Smith has a phenomenal record in England – an average of 72.20 – and played a huge role when South Africa won the last series here in 2008. If Smith is in form, he tends to dominate and the rest of the batsmen can take their cue from him. Team mate Jacque Kallis said South Africa had an extra incentive to do well in England, both to pay tribute to captain Graeme Smith and close friend and long-serving wicketkeeper Mark Boucher. “It’s a special achievement to play 100 tests,” he said of Smith. “He’s been captain for most of them as well which is an incredible effort. He’s contributed massively.”

The King Edward Community is extremely proud of one of South Africa’s most unheralded heroes who has managed to successfully surpass all expectations and wishes Graeme the very best for the Test Series ahead and raise our ‘bats’ in honour of such a great leader and sportsman.

Congratulations Graeme 100 not out !

Message from Governing Body Chair, Jonathan Gerber.

Dear King Edward VII School Community

The School Governing body has recently undergone a rigorous process with a view to appointing the new Principal of King Edward VII School. With this in mind I am very happy to announce that we should be in a position to make the announcement on the first day of the Term Three, Monday the 16 July. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Governors, Mr Rolf Hansen & the Department for the critical role that they all played in this process. I am also pleased to say that we had an excellent selection of initial candidates and a very strong final selection to be interviewed.

I know that many sectors of the School are very anxious to hear about the appointment and I am sure that by giving you a date of an announcement that this will allow many of you to enjoy your well deserved leave. Rest assured that we have the best interests of the school at heart and that we have applied our minds during this very challenging process.

Further communication will follow on the 16 July. Thank-you for your understanding and support.

Warm regards

Jonathan Gerber
Governing Body Chairman

Habana is most experienced player in Bok Squad June 2012

News 24 Cape Town – Nine uncapped players have been included in the Springbok squad of 32 for the Castle Incoming Tour against England, named on Saturday in Pretoria by SARU CEO Jurie Roux and Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

The nine uncapped players are Marcell Coetzee, JJ Engelbrecht, Eben Etzebeth, Elton Jantjies, Juandré Kruger, Coenie Oosthuizen, Jacques Potgieter, Franco van der Merwe and Jano Vermaak.

Jantjies and Oosthuizen have toured with the Springboks before, at the end of the season in 2010, while Van der Merwe and Vermaak have previously played for the Emerging Springboks.

Meyer and the national selectors, Peter Jooste and Ian McIntosh, were unanimous when it came to finalising the squad. They have also recalled 15 members of the Rugby World Cup 2011 squad, while there are nine Rugby World Cup winners from 2007 left in the squad.

The most experienced player in the squad is South Africa’s foremost test try scorer Bryan Habana, with 74 caps. Six more players have played in excess of 40 tests for South Africa.

Meyer said: “We feel that these players have what it takes to play for the Springboks and they were close to selection in the final squad. However, these three weeks provide the ideal opportunity to work with them, show them what the Springbok culture is all about and hopefully put them on the right track to play for South Africa sooner rather than later. By doing this now, we will reap the dividends going forward.

“We also rate a number of great players in the South African Under-20 squad, but they were not considered at this stage due to the fact that they are playing in a very important Junior World Championship.”

The Springbok squad is:
Backs:
Zane Kirchner (Bulls), JP Pietersen (Sharks), JJ Engelbrecht (Bulls), Jean de Villiers (Stormers), Wynand Olivier (Bulls), Francois Steyn (Racing Metro/FRA), Bryan Habana (Stormers), Lwazi Mvovo (Sharks), Bjorn Basson (Bulls), Morne Steyn (Bulls), Patrick Lambie (Sharks), Elton Jantjies (Golden Lions), Francois Hougaard (Bulls), Jano Vermaak (Bulls), Ruan Pienaar (Ulster/IRL)
Forwards:
Tendai Mtawarira (Sharks), Coenie Oosthuizen (Cheetahs), Bismarck du Plessis (Sharks), Chiliboy Ralepelle (Bulls), Adriaan Strauss (Cheetahs), Jannie du Plessis (Sharks), Werner Kruger (Bulls), Eben Etzebeth (Stormers), Flip van der Merwe (Bulls), Franco van der Merwe (Lions), Juandre Kruger (Bulls), Marcell Coetzee (Sharks), Willem Alberts (Sharks), Pierre Spies (Bulls), Ryan Kankowski (Sharks), Keegan Daniel (Sharks), Jacques Potgieter (Bulls).

Congratulations to KES Old Boy Bryan Habana on his selection. We wish him and all of the Springbok Team, Management and Technical Staff the very best in the upcoming matches! Go the Bokke!!
