Famous Old Boys Dr Bacher & Bryan Habana at KES!

King Edward VII School was a-buzz  on the 31 January, when two famous and legends in their own rights returned to their alma mater and addressed the school in a very special assembly. Dr Ali Bacher (Class of 1959) and Bryan Habana (Class of 2000) returned to King Edward to record an interview session, ‘In Conversation’, where-by Old Boy Ali Bacher interviews famous sportsmen of South Africa. Before that though both took time out of their busy schedules to address the Staff and boys in an assembly.

Dr Bacher fondly recalled his days at King Edward as been very instrumental in how his career panned out and he paid tribute to the great teachers of King Edward during his time at the school. Dr Bacher further reminded the boys about the importance of being leaders at school and in society and to always conduct themselves in a respectable manner.

Bryan Habana inspired the boys to ‘seize every day’ and to their best in all that they do- in academics and on and off the sports field. He expressed his passion about how much he valued and appreciated the privilege to have played for the crest of King Edward.

It was indeed a memorable moment for all the boys and Staff at King Edward. It is always a honour to have our Old Boys visiting us and sharing their successes with us.

King Edward Old Boy making strides in SA political arena!

King Edward VII School Old Boy Zak Mbhele (Class of 2002) is making strides in South Africa’s political arena. Zak currently holds the post of spokesperson in the Western Cape Premier’s Office!

As spokesperson/media officer Zak is the interface between the media and Helen Zille, in her capacity as Western Cape Premier. This King Edward Old Boy working within a very fast-paced environment has commented that he finds his position both rewarding and extremely challenging. When asked of his future aspirations, Zak replied he that in the foreseeable future, he would like to become a Member of Parliament (MP) for the DA in the 2014 general elections and serve two terms (i.e. 10 years) in the National Assembly.

Zak credits his current success to his schooling years at King Edward VII School. We quote his comments as such: ‘King Edward VII School’s brilliant standard of academic education laid the solid foundation for me to build on and I am especially grateful for the HJ Hofmeyr Bursary that I received at the end of Matric which made my tertiary studies that much easier on our family’s finances. It was the school that both taught and demonstrated to me one of the most valuable life lessons that I hold very dear: if you work hard to develop and apply your talents, the opportunities that come along your way, combined with your talents and hard work, will enable you reach heights and go to places far beyond what you could have ever imagined or thought possible for yourself.’

Certainly a shining example and role-model for all at King Edward to follow. The School and RED Community wish Zak further success into the future and as they say in the classics, ‘watch this space…!!’

Bevan’s school is located across the bridge from the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame.

Bevan has started an intense course of extra French lessons, as all of his classes are in French, even his English classes are in French! So there are too be many more challenges and events, our King Edward Old Boy will be faced with and an exciting upcoming trip to Alpes d’Huez in France for a Snowboarding & Skiing from the 9th – 16th February, is one he is really looking forward too!

King Edward’s KO Kid Kevin Lerena making his mark!

King Edward VII School Old Boy, Kevin Lerena (Class of 2010) is making a huge impact on the boxing scene. Fondly known as the ‘KO KID’ this cruiser-weight prospect Kevin Lerena loves his boxing so much he turned down a professional rugby contract with the Golden Lions.

This mountain of muscle, who is preparing to face a hard-punching Paraguayan next month, has dreamed of ring warfare since he was a teenager, when he first started training in a boxing gym. But being on the big side meant a nightmare finding opponents, and it was tough building an amateur record of seven wins and one loss.

Lerena then switched his main focus to rugby, playing in King Edward VII High School’s 1st XV at inside centre and winning a contract with the Golden Lions. He also scored a distinction in matric in 2010.

But earning no more than R5000 a month on a junior contract to play in the Vodacom Cup was not enough for this budding entrepreneur, who complemented his income as a bouncer. “I’m a placid guy – I can count on one hand the number of fights I’ve had outside the ring, and they were people being stupid, coming at me. Now, I just walk away.” Lerena took the experience he gained at clubs and formed a security company that recently won the tender to work the Justin Bieber concert in Cape Town later this year.

In 2011 he turned his back on rugby to become a professional boxer, and has since built up a record of five fights, all won by knockout.

“I’m a puncher,” he explains, “but I want to be a pugilist. Whatever my opponent brings, I want to adapt to that. I’ll never be defensive like [Floyd] Mayweather.”

Trainer Colin Nathan insists the key is to build Lerena’s career slowly. “He’s incredibly athletic and hits very hard, but he is still young and has a lot to learn.”

Few musclemen in boxing have risen to the top, with Michael Weaver, the former WBA heavyweight champion, being a rare example. But Lerena, who fights at 90kg, doesn’t view himself as a body-builder type. “This is me small. When I played rugby I was 110kg, now I walk around at 100kg.

“I will be cruiserweight champion of the world one day,” said Lerena, who will fight Javier Corrales, who has a record of seven wins (six by KO), one loss and two draws, at Emperors Palace on February 16.

Captain Smith & Proteas crush NZ & stay No 1 Team!

King Edward VII School Old Boy, Captain Graeme Smith led his charges to another crushing win over New Zealand and in the process sealing the Sunfoil Test Series 2-0. South Africa thumped the visitors by an innings and 193 runs on the fourth day of the second test.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith said that he had been pleased by the standard of cricket his team had played over the series as they strengthened their position as the world’s top-ranked test nation.

“We’ve had to work hard to get into this position and it’s nice to keep playing well and it’s been a wonderful two test matches for us,” Smith said at the post-match presentation.

“They (the wins) were very professional and both were very big wins. A lot of guys contributed and I thought our style of cricket and the way we played was good. Bar a couple of dropped catches in the first test I thought our cricket was of a very high standard.

A three-match one-day international series between the two countries starts in Paarl on January 19.

The King Edward Community and School extend their congratulations to Graeme and the Proteas on a clinical and fantastic win!
